I’m not a collector of 1/72 diecast models but I understand it’s a thriving hobby and this might be an interesting cross-over piece. With these models you received:Ībsent were the other Phoenix missiles, the display stand, the standing or seated pilot figures, and the authenticity card. The contents of the box were also different. The model was whiter with a weathering effect, the “chest” stripes on the Focker version split behind the cockpit, and UN Spacy wasn’t written under the wing. Instead of a nicely decorated collector’s box, these extremely limited models came in plain brown boxes. If you purchased the Macross-branded F-14 S (Focker) and J (Ichijo) variants from Winter Wonder Festival 2017, the goods you got weren’t exactly the same. The above pictures were taken from and you should visit them for lots of great info on all Macross series and events. Another notable absence are instructions but do look up above for scans of the instructions of the original releases to help you out there. There’s a place in the tray that looks like it should house an authenticity card but that place will be vacant since this release had to be done through a third party. Inside you’ll get the model as well as:ħ) 3x closed landing gear doors (the landing gear come preinstalled on the toy The accessories are updated to mirror the load Shin had when fighting the Anti-UN forces in Macross Zero, just prior to being blasted out of the sky by Nora in her SV-51. Since this was a third-party release, the model comes in a nondescript white box. There is a “Mac Z ‘third party’ release under the Black Aces banner of the Calibre Wings F-14. Since the VF-1D is also released as a Macross product instead of a Robotech product, the story on the lid of the box has been altered somewhat. It’s always nice to see a company fix issues along the way. The VF-1D trainer colors version of the toy has updated instructions that omit the language about included tools and sidewinders. The instructions also talk about installing Sidewinders but you don’t get any in the regular release versions of this model. The Hunter/Fokker instructions allude to “provided tools” to be used for parts separation but I didn’t see any provided tools. Taped to the top of that tray you’ll find a little baggy that includes:ħ) 2x Pilot figures (Or a pilot and a radar intercept officer if you prefer)Ĩ) 2x standing pilot figures (with 2x metal plates to put their feet in so they will stay standing)ĩ) Display stand (3 pieces, a base, an arm, and an adapter)Īnd taped to the bottom of the cardboard tray the clamshell sits in you’ll find: Underneath the tray that holds everything above you’ll find a second, smaller tray. Inside the box you get the F-14 model and:Ĥ) 2x exhaust nozzles (reduced diameter from those on the plane)Ħ) 3x closed landing gear doors (in the tray under the plane) There’s a flip-top lid that has a nice retconning of the F-14 into Robotech lore by giving us an alternate history where the F-14 served as a test bed for new technologies for UN Spacy. The model comes packaged in an appropriately-sized box (31 x 27 x 8.8 cm) adorned with a modern and attractive look. This product applies paint schemes that adorned the VF-1 on F-14 Tomcats (the real world plane that inspired Kawamori as he designed the VF-1). Observations & Critique: More “Robotech-themed” than Robotech Productīefore we jump in, let’s get one thing out of the way for all of you trying to remember a cartoon from 30+ years ago there were never any F-14 Tomcats in Robotech.
